Chamber president chided over Petronas bias claim

KUALA LUMPUR: Malay rights group Perkasa has questioned Malay Business Chamber of Commerce president Datuk Syed Ali Al-Attas's rationale in accusing government-owned Petronas of sidelining Bumiputera entrepreneurs.
In a statement issued yesterday, its information chief Ruslan Kasim asked Syed Ali whether the latter had ulterior motives in making the allegation on a Malay Economic Action Council (MTEM) platform, a week ago.
"We want him to explain his issues with Petronas, whether there are projects and business opportunities he or his proxies failed to secure from the oil company."
Ruslan also questioned the timing of the statement, which he said, was made as the general election drew closer.
"Would you also let us know if there is any third party encouraging you to go around, especially during times like these?" he asked.
Last Sunday, the Malay non-governmental business organisation had expressed disappointment with Petronas, claiming that all of its major contracts were being awarded to foreign companies.
Syed Ali, who is also chairman of MTEM, further claimed that equally qualified local companies were not getting any contracts. He urged the prime minister to intervene and ensure that contracts were awarded fairly.
