KUALA LUMPUR: Another Malay rights group yesterday challenged Malay Business Chamber of Commerce president Datuk Syed Ali Al-Attas to reveal his motive in launching an attack against Petronas.
Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) president Azwanddin Hamzah said Syed Ali had abused his position as chairman of the Malay Economic Action Council (MTEM) by accusing Petronas of sidelining Bumiputera entrepreneurs.
"We want him to declare his private interest in using the MTEM as a platform to attack Petronas especially when we've never heard of MTEM's efforts to help Malay entrepreneurs.
"How can he consider himself as a champion when many of us are not even aware of MTEM's existence," Azwanddin said in a press statement yesterday.
He also accused Syed Ali of belittling the government's efforts in encouraging more participation among the Malays.
"We believe he has a special motive for doing so and he was also backed by several individuals.
"We want him to reveal the people who orchestrated his move as his action could be backed by the opposition."
Last Sunday, the Malay non-governmental business organisation had expressed disappointment with Petronas, claiming that all of its major contracts were being awarded to foreign companies.
Syed Ali further claimed that equally qualified local companies were not getting any contracts and urged the prime minister to intervene and ensure that contracts were awarded fairly.
